Sowing the Seed of Faith

A Summary of Father Sunny’s Mission Appeal

The following is a summary of Father Sunny’s message, prepared from notes and an audio recording. It is not a verbatim transcript.

During his visit to St. Mary’s this weekend, Father Sunny reminded us that every Christian shares in Christ’s missionary call. Drawing upon the familiar Parable of the Sower, he reflected on how God generously scatters the seed of His Word, inviting each of us to help prepare hearts to receive it.

Using the beautiful imagery from the prophet Isaiah, Father Sunny compared God’s Word to the rain and snow that fall from heaven. Just as rain nourishes the earth and enables seeds to grow, God’s Word gives life to our souls and bears fruit when it finds receptive hearts.

The challenge for each of us, he explained, is to ask what kind of soil our hearts have become. Are they hardened by life’s struggles? Distracted by worldly concerns? Or are they open and ready to receive the Lord’s grace?

Father Sunny shared experiences from his years serving as a missionary in the Philippines, as well as his ministry in India, Africa, Europe, and the United States. Missionary work often requires patience. Seeds planted today may not bear fruit for many years, but God continues to work quietly in every heart.

He recalled visiting an elderly woman in a nursing home whose physical suffering had not diminished her faith. She told him that she always tried to find “a little seed of faith” in every person she met. Her simple witness served as a reminder that even small acts of kindness and encouragement can help God’s love take root.

Father Sunny also spoke about the importance of evangelization and faith formation. Programs such as the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) continue to welcome many people into the Catholic Church each year. These new Catholics need communities that will nurture and strengthen the faith that has been planted within them.

He reminded us that missionary work extends far beyond preaching. It includes caring for children, serving the poor, supporting education, providing healthcare, and accompanying those who are searching for Christ.

Father Sunny encouraged us not to become discouraged if we do not immediately see the results of our efforts. God alone gives the growth. Our responsibility is to prepare the soil, sow the seed with love, and trust the Lord to bring forth fruit in His own time.

His message echoed the familiar advice often attributed to St. Francis de Sales:

Each of us is called to bloom wherever God has placed us—within our families, our parish, our workplace, and our community—allowing Christ’s love to grow through our words, our actions, and our faithful witness.

“The seed is the word of God.”

May we continue to sow that seed generously and trust God to accomplish the harvest.
